Invisalign - How Long Does It Take to Work?
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign are aligners similar to metal braces that are virtually invisible. They are made from a type of thermoplastic material that was uniquely designed and created for the Invisalign Treatment Plan. These aligners are custom made for you and work in the same way that braces do to move crooked teeth into alignment for a confident and beautiful smile.
How Does it Work?
A course of treatment is set out in advance by your dentist and a process is mapped out according to your particular situation and the desired end result. During the treatment a series of aligners will be fitted, each one making a slight adjustment to the position of your teeth, gradually causing the teeth to shift from their current position. About 2 weeks after the initial fitting, a new set of aligners will be fitted. This process will be continued until the teeth have been straightened.
What are the Benefits of Invisalign?
- Unlike traditional braces, they are virtually invisible as there are no metal and wires.
- They can be removed when eating and when brushing or flossing.
- There are no metal brackets and wires that can cause discomfort and irritation.
- You will spend less time at the dentist for adjustments.
- You can view the virtual results of what your teeth will look like after treatment.
The Treatment Process
It is recommended by dentists that aligners should be worn for a minimum of 20 - 22 hours every day to be most effective. They can be removed temporarily for short periods when eating, brushing or flossing, but should be worn day and night, every day for most of the time over a 24-hour period.
Your treatment program will have regular appointments scheduled, typically about every 4 to 6 weeks apart, to check that the progress is being made as planned.
How long does it take for Invisalign to Work?
The length of treatment depends entirely on the severity of your particular case and can only be determined after a thorough check-up. However, on average it has been found that it takes approximately 12 months for adult teeth to realign with the use of Invisalign aligners, providing there are no major problems with your jaw and mouth.
The results for children and teenagers will vary considerably as their mouths are still growing. However, once the alignment issue has been assessed, your dental practitioner should be able to give you an idea, based on his or her experience, how long it may take for a young person’s teeth to be realigned.
What Happens After Treatment?
Anyone who has had orthodontic treatment, whether they have used traditional braces or the latest Invisalign treatment, should use a retainer for a period of time to prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original position. Your dentist will discuss your post-treatment with you and because every case is different, will recommend whether retainers will be needed to be worn on both your upper and lower teeth and for how long.
